Smoothing out lines from movement
Common Questions
What are Botox and Dysport?
Botox® and Dysport® are both forms of Botulinum toxin, which blocks chemical signals causing movement to the muscles. When injected into areas like the brow or around the eyes, they can relax muscles that cause wrinkles and expression lines, creating a smoother skin appearance.
Results are dependent of the number of units injected – using a few units can give a softer, natural look with some movement remaining, and using more units can stop movement entirely. We will work with you to ensure the treatment matches your goals, and we always strive for a natural look! Different muscles require different numbers of units for best results.
Botox and Dysport work in similar ways, but differ in some chemical properties, like how much they spread upon injection. We use these products in different areas depending on your goals, but you don’t have to pick one prior to your appointment (unless you have a reason to choose one specifically!)
How do I prepare?
Schedule your treatment 4 weeks before a special event to ensure skin is fully healed and the neurotoxin is active.
Come to your appointment well-hydrated and with a clean face. If you’re wearing products or makeup when you arrive, our cleansers are available in the office when you arrive.
You may start an arnica supplement several days before your treatment to help minimize bruising.
Neurotoxins can be performed on the same day as facials, but should be scheduled AFTER the facial. They cannot be performed the same day as lasers or peels.
Neurotoxins (Botox, Dysport) cannot be performed during pregnancy or breast-feeding.
What can I expect during the treatment?
During your treatment, we will use very small needles to perform quick injections into the muscles. That’s it!
What is the aftercare?
You may have small red bumps in the areas of injection. These will disappear about 1-2 hours after injection.
Bruising may occur with injection. You can use ice or take Tylenol if you are uncomfortable, and can cover a bruise with concealer.
Results develop gradually over 7-10 days. It takes 10-14 days to see full results from treatment. Let us know if you notice any asymmetry 2 weeks after treatment – we can correct that with the addition of a few more units!
What are the most commonly treated areas?
Neurotoxin is most commonly used to soften expression lines on the forehead, between the eyes (glabella) and around the eyes. It can also be used on the nose (bunny lines), to correct a gummy smile, to prevent downturning of the smile, or for a dimpled chin or strong masseter muscles (from clenching or grinding teeth). Neurotoxin is also used to treat hyperhidrosis, which is excessive sweating, in the underarms.
