Common Questions
What is laser resurfacing?
Laser resurfacing uses an ablative fractionated laser, either Erbium YAG
Profractional or Deka CO2, to create channels into the skin and stimulate collagen genesis. An ablative laser works by vaporizing tiny islands of skin at a controlled depth (this determines the intensity of the treatment). We will evaluate your skin type and concerns to determine which type of laser and settings are most appropriate for you.
How do I prepare?
One week before your laser resurfacing treatment, stop using exfoliating products (including retinol/tretinoin, AHAs, BHAs, and scrubs).
Avoid sun exposure in the weeks leading up to your treatment.
If you get cold sores (HSV), let us know. We may ask you to take preventative medicine prior to your treatment.
Come to your appointment well-hydrated and with a clean face. If you’re wearing products or makeup when you arrive, our cleansers are available in the office for you to use.
Schedule your treatment at least 4 weeks prior to a special event, to be sure skin if fully healed.
We do not recommend laser treatments during pregnancy.
What can I expect during the treatment?
You may feel warmth or a snapping sensation during the laser treatment.
Topical numbing, ice, and cold air will be used during your treatment to keep you comfortable.
When the treatment is complete, your skin will feel hot and you will be red. You may have pinpoint bleeding in some areas.
What is the aftercare?
We will provide you with detailed instructions and a post-procedure kit to use in the days following the treatment. It is important to adhere to these directions very closely to ensure proper healing.
You will have redness and swelling for a few days to up to several weeks after treatment, depending on the intensity of your resurfacing.
Apply sunscreen anytime you will be near the sun, and avoid sun exposure as much as possible while healing.
Get in touch with us right away if you develop a rash, break out, itching, tenderness, or other symptoms in the days following your treatment.
More than 1 session is typically required for best results.
