What to Expect During Treatment
Microneedling with our expert team will begin with a thorough discussion of your health history, goals, and lifestyle, followed by a skin examination and customized treatment plan to optimize your results. At Clara Dermatology, microneedling is performed by your board-certified dermatologist using a microneedling pen to create controlled wounds in the skin and activate the natural healing process.
To begin, the treatment area is cleansed and a topical numbing cream is applied to minimize any discomfort. The microneedling device is then passed back and forth over the treatment area using serums to help the device glide smoothly. Following treatment, other serums or active ingredients can be applied to the skin to be absorbed into the newly created channels and improve their efficacy.
Microneedling can take anywhere between 20-60 minutes depending on the size of the treatment area, and it typically feels prickly but not painful.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive and effective way to achieve more youthful-looking, even skin and to fill in scars and stretch marks. To learn more about your treatment options with our board certified dermatologists, we invite you to contact our office by calling or booking online.
Collagen is the main protein in the structural matrix of the skin. Together with elastin, they work to help keep the skin smooth and firm in the deep layers of the skin. Over time, as the skin ages, the body stops producing collagen and elastin.
Microneedling also called collagen induction therapy, is a minimally-invasive treatment that rejuvenates the skin by stimulating the skin’s ability to repair itself through collagen production. Microneedling devices contain numerous fine micro-needles that penetrate the skin, creating tiny channels. This triggers the body’s natural wound healing processes, which stimulates new collagen and elastin. This can help improve the appearance of scars, boost collagen production, and encourage hair growth. In the hands of an experienced, board-certified dermatologist, it can be an easy way to achieve smoother, more youthful-looking skin.
How does Microneedling work?
Microneedling works by using a handheld device with many sterile, small “micro” needles to introduce a controlled wound into the top layers of the skin. The body then produces new collagen and elastin to repair these columns of micro-injuries, resulting in thickening skin with improved texture. The depth that the needles penetrate the skin can be adjusted based on the location on the body and the depth of the scars or wrinkles being treated.
Microneedling boosts essential proteins like collagen and, as the skin heals, the damaged dermis is replaced with healthy new skin tissue. The result is an improvement in skin texture, firmness, and a reduction in concerns like scars, pore size, and aging signs, leading to healthier, younger-looking skin.
Microneedling devices can come in a few different types, one of which might be better for your concerns than the other. These include:
- Dermal Roller: A dermal roller is a cylindrical drum covered in tiny needles. With a molded handle, it’s rolled over the skin to create tiny punctures.
- Dermal Stamp: This method of microneedling uses a precise stamping action on the skin to create small wounds.
- Microneedling Pen: The pen is the most advanced form of microneedling on the market. It includes a small handheld device that is run over the skin to create controlled punctures.
There’s little downtime required after a microneedling treatment, but you can expect some slight swelling and a pink to red color in the treated area for 1-2 days after treatment. Your dermatologist will review your post-treatment skincare regimen during your treatment session. As in other resurfacing procedures, it’s very important to protect your skin from the sun during recovery, since the skin is more sensitive to sunlight during this time. To achieve the best results, plan on a least a series of three treatments, spaced about 4-6 weeks apart. Our team will provide extended details of how to care for your skin after your procedure so you can maintain your results for the long-term.
