What is the CoolPeel Laser?

Deka’s SmartXide Tetra CO2 is the most advanced CO2 laser on the market. It allows for precise control of the power and duration of the laser energy, which can be thought of as pulse control. It also has a variety of settings that can be used depending on desired outcomes. The CoolPeel treatment is possible because of the unique pulse control of the Tetra called the H-pulse. The H-pulse is a high peak power, short pulse duration that ablates micrometer fractions of the skin without creating a lingering heat in the skin – resulting in much less downtime that traditional resurfacing laser treatments.

How does CO2 laser work?

The target, or chromophore, of carbon dioxide is water. CO2 lasers have a wavelength of 10,600nm that is highly absorbed by water in the skin. Water makes up about 64% of skin and therefore, CO2 lasers are used to resurface the skin. We generally describe resurfacing as a “controlled wound,” that is created to stimulate new collagen and elastin, improving skin texture and appearance. The mostly commonly used resurfacing lasers are fractionated lasers, meaning the laser energy is delivered in fractions, leaving behind islands of normal skin that contribute to healing after the treatments and also decrease unwanted side effects.  

What should I expect during a CoolPeel treatment?

CoolPeel is the lighter version of traditional fractionated CO2 laser treatments. No numbing or sedation is required. During the treatment, the laser energy is delivered in quick pulses that takes 15-20 minutes for the face and feels warm, but not uncomfortable. At the end of the procedure, the area treated will be pink, like a sunburn. This resolves in 24-48 hours and then the area will feel rough, but does not look much different that normal. Over the next week (face) or two (chest/arms), the roughness transitions to smoother, brighter skin!
