Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, works by using a handheld device with many sterile, small “micro” needles to introduce a controlled wound into the top layers of the skin. The body then produces new collagen and elastin to repair these columns of micro-injuries, resulting in thickened skin with improved texture. The depth of needle penetration can be adjusted based on the location on the body and the depth of the scars or wrinkles being treated. Collagen building takes up to 12 weeks.
Microneedling boosts essential proteins like collagen and, as the skin heals, the damaged dermis is replaced with healthy new skin tissue. The result is an improvement in skin texture, firmness, and a reduction in concerns like scars, pore size, and aging signs, leading to healthier, younger-looking skin.
Come to your appointment well-hydrated and with a clean face. If you’re wearing products or makeup when you arrive, our cleansers are available in the office for you to use.
Schedule your treatment 2 weeks prior to a special event, to be sure skin if fully healed.
You may start an arnica supplement several days before your treatment to help minimize bruising.
Microneedling during pregnancy should be cleared by your Ob/GYN.
When you arrive, topical numbing ointment will be applied to the treatment area. The microneedling device is then passed back and forth over the treatment area using hyaluronic acid or PRP to help the device glide smoothly. You will feel a vibrating or prickly sensation during treatment.
Boosters can be applied to the skin to target specific concerns, such as tranexamic acid for treating melasma, TCA for deeper collagen stimulation, or PRP for rejuvenation.
After the treatment, your face will be very red, as if you have a sunburn. You will feel warmth in your skin, but you should not be in pain.
We will apply a protective balm and provide you with a post-procedure kit to care for your skin in the days following treatment.
It is very important that you avoid sun exposure while healing. In some cases, you may be instructed to apply a topical steroid for a few days after treatment to minimize post-treatment discoloration.
Redness lasts 5-7 days, with very light peeling happening on days 3-5. You can resume your regular skin care routine after your skin is fully healed, about a week after treatment.
For best results, multiple treatments sessions may be required, about 4-6 weeks apart.
Microneedling is a very effective way to stimulate new collagen production in the skin. It is excellent for treating acne scarring, though multiple treatments are required. Microneedling can be an effective treatment for melasma, and we may recommend adding a topical tranexamic acid serum to boost the brighting results. Microneedling can also be used for general rejuvenation and improving fine lines, and is the safest option in darker skin types. It can be performed year round.
