Common Questions

Laser hair reduction, or laser hair removal, is a treatment that reduces the growth of unwanted hair using laser energy. The laser works by targeting pigment in the hair shaft, generating heat and damaging the follicles, gradually slowing their growth. Laser hair reduction works most effectively on coarse dark hair. Most patients require multiple treatments for the best results. This allows the area to be treated at different stages of the hair growth cycle. The result of laser hair reduction is a drastic reduction in hair growth, although you may still need to shave, wax, or pluck the area to fully get rid of hair. Laser hair reduction can make it much easier and less labor-intensive. You can also return for maintenance treatments as needed.

Avoid sun exposure or self tanner for 2-4 weeks leading up to your treatment.

Shave the treatment area the night before your visit, removing all visible hair.

Do NOT pluck, wax, sugar, or otherwise remove hair from the root in the two weeks prior to your treatment.

Come to your appointment well-hydrated and with a clean skin in the area to be treated.

We do not recommend treatment with lasers during pregnancy.

You will be given protective glasses to wear during the treatment. The laser beam is directed at the treatment area and you will feel a snapping sensation similar to a rubber band snap when the laser is fired. We will use ice packs and cold air during the treatment to keep your comfortable.

After treatment, you’ll experience some mild sensitivity and redness similar to a sunburn. You may develop a hive-like reaction in the treatment area. You can apply ice packs or 1% hydrocortisone to the area if you are itching or uncomfortable.

Be sure to use sunscreen and avoid sun exposure while healing.

The hair in the treated area will shed in the 2 weeks following treatment. During this time you can shave if you prefer not to wait for the shedding.

You will need a series of 4-6 treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, for best results.
