Microneedling: Understanding the Essentials

Microneedling is a minimally-invasive treatment that rejuvenates the skin by stimulating new collagen production and is one of our favorite treatments!

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, is a minimally-invasive treatment that rejuvenates the skin by stimulating new collagen production. It is one of our favorite treatments for creating brighter, healthier skin.

What’s it like to have microneedling?

Microneedling is a procedure that uses a handheld device, called a microneedling pen, that has many sterile, “micro” needles to introduce a controlled wound into the top layers of the skin. Before the microneedling procedure, a topical numbing ointment is applied on the area for about 30 minutes – this helps make the procedure comfortable. After the ointment is removed, a thin solution of hyaluronic acid is placed on the skin – this acts as a glide as the microneedling pen is moved over the skin in a grid-like pattern until it is uniformly red. The redness indicates that micro-channels have been successfully created in the skin. These channels will be filled in by new collagen. During the procedure, most people feel a vibration and some mild discomfort in the most sensitive areas (forehead, nose, upper lip). After the procedure, soothing ointment and sunscreen may be applied to the skin. Treating the entire face takes about 30 minutes.

How is the recovery after microneedling?

Immediately after your treatment, you will look as though you have a moderate to severe sunburn and your skin may feel warm and tight. You may have pinpoint areas of bruising. You may also notice some slight swelling, this is normal and will normally start to diminish within 24 hours. You may continue to see redness after 24 hours, but this will continue to resolve over the next 2-4 days; occasionally this can take 7 days to fully resolve. Your dermatologist will review your post-treatment skincare regimen during your treatment session. As in other resurfacing procedures, it’s very important to protect your skin from the sun during recovery, since the skin is more sensitive to sunlight during this time.

What does microneedling treat?

Collagen is the main protein in the structural matrix of the skin. Together with elastin, it works to help keep the skin smooth and firm. Scarring and aging are both conditions that result from decreased collagen. The tiny channels created during microneedling trigger the body’s natural wound healing processes with new collagen and elastin production, resulting in brighter skin with improved texture (less scarring and wrinkling). The collagen production can continue for months following the procedure. To achieve the best results, plan on at least a series of three treatments, spaced about 4-6 weeks apart.
