Essential Skin Safety for your Next Sunny Vacay

Whether you’re off on a cruise, a relaxing beach escape, or a city sight-seeing tour, it’s so important to keep sun safety top of mind when packing. Read on for our guide to 6 things to pack for a sun-safe adventure.

1. Sunscreen, and More Sunscreen:

You knew we’d lead with this, right? A variety of sunscreen options should top your packing list. Opt for broad-spectrum protection with an SPF of 30 or higher to shield your skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Remember to reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. We like to bring different formulations for different situations or times of day (or personal preferences – picky children, anyone?) A large bottle of lotion for body, a tinted facial cream, and then for reapplication, consider a spray or mousse, a powder for your scalp, or a stick for your face. Pack enough sunscreen to last the entire trip, ensuring you have backups for unexpected circumstances.

2. Sun Protective Clothing:

Incorporate sun-protective clothing into your vacation wardrobe. Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, UPF 50+ rash guards, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses are your best bets for shielding sensitive skin from harmful rays. We always pack multiple styles of rash guards and hats so you can always look cute when hitting the pool or beach.

3. Hydration Station:

Staying hydrated is key to maintaining healthy skin, especially under the sun’s intense glare. Pack a refillable water bottle to keep thirst at bay while exploring a new city or relaxing poolside. Opt for electrolyte-rich beverages to replenish lost minerals from sweating under the tropical sun.

4. Antioxidants:

In addition to your sunscreen, consider packing a daily dose of antioxidants that can raise your threshold for burning under the sun. Supplements like Heliocare and InnerGlow Vitamins Sol Defense contain highly potent plant-derived antioxidants that work with you SPF to protect your skin and prevent burning. We always pack these for sunny vacations, and any days when we’re going to be out and about in the sun.

5. UV-Blocking Accessories:

We’ve covered clothing and hats, but don’t forget two other sun sensitive parts of the body – eyes and lips. Protect your pout with a moisturizing lip balm containing SPF protection. Lips are just as susceptible to sunburn as the rest of your body. Accessorize your eyes with UV-blocking sunglasses. Today, most – but not all – sunglasses have UV protection built into the lenses, but be sure to check yours to make sure you are protected. Typically the label “UV400” will be listed somewhere on the lenses to signify UV protection.

6. After-Sun Care:

Wind down each day with after-sun care rituals to nourish and replenish sun-exposed skin. Pack hydrating moisturizers, soothing after-sun lotions, and gentle skincare products to pamper your skin post-sun exposure. Try keeping your moisturizer in the refrigerator for an extra-soothing post-sun hydration session.

Despite your best efforts, sunburns can sometimes happen. Pack a soothing gel or lotion containing aloe vera to provide instant relief for sun-kissed skin. Aloe vera’s cooling properties can calm inflammation and accelerate the healing process, allowing you to get back to enjoying your cruise in comfort. You can also use ice or cold compresses and ibuprofen to help reduce inflammation in sun burned skin.

Smooth Sailing Ahead

With these sun safety essentials in your suitcase, you’re well-equipped to embark on a sun-kissed adventure without sacrificing skin health. Remember to prioritize sun protection, stay hydrated, and embrace shady retreats to make the most of your time away. Bon voyage!
